Around 1,400 migrant were rescued in the Mediterranean Sea onTuesday 16 January, as reported by the Italian Coast Guard. Some boats belonging to the coastguard , the financial police, the EU Sophia mission to fight human trafficking at sea and the Spanish NGO Proactiva conducted 11 separate rescue operations to bring to safety the passengers of seven canoes, three small wooden boats and a bigger one.

Two corpses have also been found aboard, trying to escape the North Africa. Spanish rescuers said that they helped an overloaded boat carrying about 400 people, in extremely dangerous conditions, and that one of the bodies was that of a child.
