More than 1,500 migrants have been rescued off Libya in recent days and most of them have been taken to Italy in operations that have been marked by at least 11 deaths and where NGOs have played a key role.

 

This new wave of departures came as the Italian Court of Cassation is expected to rule Tuesday morning on the sequestration of Iuventa, the ship of the German NGO Jugend Rettet, seized in August 2017 on suspicion of aid toillegal immigration. In total, the Italian Coast Guard coordinated the rescue of 169 migrants on April 18, then about 400 Saturday, 500 Sunday and several hundred Monday. All these migrants landed on Monday in Italy or had to do it in the following days.
